About ABSLTA

Who are the Association of British Sign Language Tutors & Assessors?

We are:

  • An Association for professional Sign Language Tutors & Assessors and for those interested in the teaching & assessing of British Sign Language as a profession
  • The co-ordinating body between Sign Language Tutors & Assessors throughout England Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
  • Formed in April 1989 in response to many requests from Deaf tutors & Assessors who wanted a forum for advice, support and exchange of information relating to BSL teaching & assessing issue
  • Managed by an Executive Committee comprising a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and an agreed number of elected members of the Association

Who is ABSLTA for?

  • Sign Language tutors – both qualified and trainee
  • Assessors of Sign Language and related subjects
  • Interpreters and trainee interpreters
  • Students on all Sign Language courses at all levels
  • Communication support workers
  • Classroom assistants/facilitators
  • Professional workers with Deaf People
  • Researchers
  • Anyone with an interest in Sign Language issues – for example, examiners, college staff, etc

What are our aims?

  • To safeguard the professional interests of members
  • To promote training and professional standards
  • To promote and take part in research into areas relevant to Sign Language teaching and assessing
  • To offer advice and support on matters relating to the teaching and assessing of Sign Language
  • To liaise with other bodies on Sign Language assessments and examinations
  • To produce a resource bank of materials suitable for the teaching of Sign Language
  • To support Adult Education colleges as needed

How can ABSLTA help you?

  • Provide workshops, meetings, etc, for problem-solving, discussions on Sign
  • Language teaching and assessing issues, exchange of ideas on teaching materials, etc
  • Encourage and support tutor/assessor members in setting up their own local support groups
  • Provide up-to-date information on Sign Language teaching and assessing issues
  • Provide information via our own internet website [www.abslt.org.uk]
  • Organise Annual General Meetings and Conferences for exchange of ideas
  • Act as a liaison body between Sign Language tutors and other professional bodie such as CACDP, BDA, ASLI, etc.

How is ABSLTA funded?

  • By membership fees and donations.

Would you please let me know if there are any classes within the Leicester area for British Sign Language classes.

Hi Coral, the best place to find suitable BSL classes would via Signature’s website http://www.cacdp.org.uk/portal/centre_finder where it will lists accredited courses at several places in Leicester/shire. Please contact us again if you wish to seek for more information. Good luck
